The Evolution of The BodySense Method
from 1969 to the present...

The Essence of BodySense

The BodySense Method is a total body program in which we learn to respond to the feedback of our bodies, to use our breath properly and to know the requirements of a given posture. Practicing BodySense permits our movements to flow together rather than to contradict one another as often happens in other exercise programs. The BodySense process enlivens nerve networks and muscle fibers that have lain dormant, thus allowing each movement to support the entire body. Practice results in resiliency at any age or stage of life.

BodySense is also a process, a moving meditation. It encourages us to be focused in the moment as we experience the unity of mind, body and spirit. Each meditative moment is a part of the process promoting self-discovery and inner peace.  Therefore, BodySense is much more than physical fitness; it enhances psychological and emotional fitness simultaneously.

How does BodySense differ from conventional exercise?

The initial responsiveness of the body becomes limited from years of abuse with conventional exercise. The unique effectiveness of BodySense lies in the way it targets areas which are rarely used.  In its capacity to open blocked energy pathways, it  supplies all parts with fresh vitality. The key to opening pathways is what I call "playing the edge."  This edge refers to our physical limitations and is the tension felt just before pain. As we "play the edge" of what is physically possible, the edge expands safely with BodySense, extending our limits.  More openness offers corresponding flexibility and increased energy.  Without an aligned BodySense foundation, all suffer, going too far over that "edge".

A danger of traditional calisthenics is in temptation to "go on automatic", as we stop paying attention to our pain feedback.  We ignore the signals.   This increases the likelihood of experiencing boredom and sustaining thus a  repetition injury through non-attention. Since our "edge" changes subtly from day to day and even from breath to breath, we must be conscious of alignment in each movement.

As we approach our "edge" at any given time, we must breathe into it and align from beneath, thus relieving the space surrounding it. Not only does this increase our physical endurance, it also has the potential to release and relieve unexpressed emotional energy as well. From this, health happens.

Alignment, not momentum, rules.

The role of the breath, as in the role of listening attentively, is neglected in conventional exercise.  Proper breathing technique creates the bridge between mind and body.  It enables us to experience a mind-body continuum. Thus we come to experience ourselves as a harmonious whole instead of a duality.

This quality of knowingness is the heart of The BodySense Method.
This is true meditation in motion; understanding your essence.

BodySense and Beyond

Physical fitness is much more than physical activity; it includes psychological and emotional aspects as well. To keep ourselves truly fit on all levels requires a commitment to become the best we can be. Bodysense is a viable vehicle to encourage such commitment. The body issues a daily challenge. The BodySense Method answers this challenge.

1. Through The BodySense Method we embrace life.

2. BodySense is subtle in its alignment,
strong in its control,
precise in its execution.

3. It is our Birthright!
